Thru-Wall Reference Electrode (RPR)

CerAnode’s RPR Thru-Wall Reference Electrode is a rugged, through‑wall reference electrode engineered to provide accurate, long-term potential measurements inside pressurized or contained metallic structures. It mounts through a tapped vessel or pipe wall, enabling direct monitoring of internal structure potential under service conditions.
Designed for industrial and cathodic protection (CP) environments, the RPR maintains ionic contact via a porous junction that links the internal reference cell to the external or internal environment.

Its durable design supports high integrity in difficult environments, allowing CP engineers to verify polarization, corrosion risk, and CP system performance without compromising system integrity.

Key Features & Benefits

Materials & Construction:

  • Stable Reference Chemistry: Employs a reliable reference half-cell (e.g., Cu/CuSO₄ or Ag/AgCl) to deliver a consistent and well-known electrode potential.
  • Robust Through‑Wall Housing: Built to screw into a tapped wall with a secure mechanical seal, minimizing leakage and ensuring structural integrity.
  • Porous Junction: The tip incorporates a ceramic or fritted junction to allow ionic exchange while preventing contamination and preserving the internal electrolyte.

Electrical Performance:

  • Accurate Potential Measurement: Enables reliable structure‑to‑environment potential readings directly from the inside of the structure, reducing IR artifacts.
  • Low Polarization Drift: Designed to minimize disturbances when current is flowing or when connected to monitoring systems, which helps maintain measurement stability.
  • Long-Term Stability: Internal reference components are engineered for minimal drift and long deployment times in CP systems.

Durability & Environment:

  • High-Pressure Tolerance: Suitable for installations in pipes, vessels, or waterboxes where internal pressure or temperature demands are present.
  • Corrosion-Resistant Materials: Uses materials compatible with CP environments, ensuring that the electrode housing and junction last through prolonged service.
  • Wide Compatibility: Can be used with a variety of electrolytes—freshwater, brackish, or process fluid—depending on the selected reference chemistry.

Monitoring & Integration:

  • Seamless CP Integration: Designed to mount in-line with standard CP test station practices (junction boxes, test posts).
  • Custom Cable Options: Available with a range of cable types, insulation styles, and lengths to match specific monitoring system needs.
  • Permanent Deployment: Intended for long-term CP system monitoring, reducing the need for removal or replacement.

Applications

  • Internal monitoring of pressure vessels or process tanks
  • Use in condensers, water‑boxes, and circulating piping systems
  • CP systems in pipelines where a through‑wall method is required to reach the inner surface
  • High-accessibility or high-pressure systems where external reference insertion is impractical
  • Long-term CP test stations in industrial or utility infrastructure
