Magnesium Sacrificial Anode #1

A Magnesium Sacrificial Anode is a corrosion-protection device that safeguards steel or ferrous structures by acting as a “sacrificial” metal: the magnesium corrodes preferentially, preserving the protected metal. Because magnesium is highly anodic compared with steel, it serves as an efficient galvanic anode, supplying protective current without external power.

These anodes are available in a variety of shapes and sizes—rods, bars, block, ribbons—to suit different applications such as buried pipelines, storage tanks, water heaters, and underground metal structures.

Key Features & Benefits

Electrochemical Performance:

  • High Driving Voltage: Provides one of the most negative potentials among sacrificial anode materials—typically between –1.55 V and –1.70 V vs. Cu/CuSO₄ reference—ensuring strong galvanic protection even in high-resistivity soils or low-conductivity environments.
  • Galvanic—No External Power Required: Unlike impressed-current (IC) systems, magnesium anodes self-drive protection currents, meaning no rectifiers or power cables are needed.
  • Rapid Activation: Upon connection, magnesium begins corroding immediately, providing protective current without delay—useful for temporary protection or during construction before permanent cathodic protection (CP) systems are installed.

Material & Design Flexibility:

  • Versatile Shapes & Sizes: Available as cast blocks, rods, bars, ribbons, and custom shapes—suitable for buried pipelines, tanks, water heaters, and other varied geometry.
  • Pre-packaged Options: Some magnesium anodes come in pre-packaged backfill to enhance soil conductivity and prolong life in buried installations.
  • Low Density & Easy Handling: Magnesium’s relatively low density makes handling and installation easier compared to heavier anode materials—beneficial for field work and retrofit projects.

Durability & Environmental Suitability:

  • Effective in Soil and Fresh Water: Particularly suited for underground pipelines, buried vessels, freshwater storage tanks, and other non-marine or low-salinity environments.
  • Cost-Effective Protection: Because no external power is needed and maintenance is minimal, magnesium anode systems offer a low-cost, low-maintenance CP solution—ideal for remote or rural installations.
  • Environmentally Passive: As a sacrificial system, there is no risk of stray currents or external electrical interference; corrosion is concentrated on the anode, minimizing risk to surrounding structures.

Applications

  • Buried or underground pipelines and gas mains needing galvanic cathodic protection.
  • Above-ground or underground storage tanks—soil-side or internal water/oil contact protection
  • Water heaters, boilers, and freshwater storage tanks—internal sacrificial protection
  • Buried or buried-near vessels and risers, including well casings, sump tanks
  • Utility and infrastructure grounding systems, valve boxes, and buried metallic enclosures
  • Short-term or temporary corrosion protection
